Some artists find their medium. Others have their medium find them. For Houston based live wedding planner and floral preservation artist Heidi Marie, her path into the wedding world as an artist flowed to her naturally.
I sat down with Heidi to learn how she discovered talent for bringing couples’ love stories to life on canvas.
From Wedding Coordinator to Live Painter
Heidi has always felt drawn to creativity. She grew up painting, creating and exploring her creative side. However, after collage she found herself in the bridal world professionally, not as an artist but as a wedding coordinator. It was as her time as a wedding coordinator that inspiration struck when she attended a ceremony where the couple had a live ceremony painter paint the couple amid their weddings.
“I had a couple painters come in, (to wedding ceremonies) and I was just like…. I could be doing that.”
Heidi expressed how seeing a live artist in action sparked something in her she just could not ignore and by 2023, Heidi officially stepped out on her own as a live wedding painter.

How Heidi Captures a Couple’s story on Canvas
Every portrait begins long before the wedding day. About a month out Heidi will send couples a detailed questionnaire that helps her create the perfect portrait. And if couples are unsure of what exactly it is they are looking for, they can trust Heidi’s artistic judgment.
“If they want my creative direction, I’ll do my best – but I always confirm the reference photo with them before I start painting.”
Her process on the wedding day is a dance of timing and creative flow. She waits to capture the couples key moment, often the first kiss, though it can be anything meaningful to the couple. She also tries to capture the moment by taking a photo and if need be, if she finds that the photographer got a better angle, she will ask the photographer to send her the photo to reference. Though she makes sure to not interfere with photographers and videographers.
If she misses the shot, she simply has the couple recreate it during cocktail hour.
Her shift from oil paints to acrylics has also made a huge difference in her confidence and workflow.
“Acrylics dry so much faster. I can layer quickly, and couples see more in the reveal. Oils are beautiful, but they take forever to dry.”
She never finishes the entire painting on site. Instead, she reveals a nearly complete piece by the end of the night and takes it home for final refinements. Couples can expect to receive their finished portrait within 2-4 weeks.
A Unique Addition
In addition to painting, Heidi also offers floral preservation, a service that often surprises and delights her couples.
“If I’m live painting at the wedding and they want to save their bouquet or centerpiece flowers, I can snag those on my way out. It’s one less thing for them to worry about.”
Her preservation style uses epoxy and resin, creating stunning keepsakes. This is what really sets Heidi apart from other live painting artist, her ability to be a “ one-stop-shop”. She can collect your bouquet before leaving and turn them in to a tangible memory for you to keep forever. She does ask couples to give her a heads up before the big day if they decide to use this service as it does take around 3 to 6 months to complete.

Heidi’s Advice for Couples
Heidis advice for brides is to make sure you do your research and talk to the artist personally.
“I know our generation doesn’t like phone calls, but it really helps…. You can feel out each other’s vibes.”
Heidi has attended Several Bridal Extravaganza shows and she’ll be back for this years 2026 January 26 show located in the creative corner of the show. She loves connecting with couples and networking with neighboring vendors. Also check out her Instagram page @heidimarieartisty or visit her website and click the ‘Contact Me’ tab to inquire.
